From: Maryland | posted: 7/6/2004 at 1:15:48 AM ET If I'm not mistaken, and there's a big possibility that I am, wasn't Bernadette nominated for featured actress whereas Joanna Gleason was nominated for best actress? That might have something to do with it. Maybe Bernadette had stiff competition? I don't really know, but she certainly deserved the Tony for that role.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 7/6/2004 at 9:25:33 AM ET Bernadette wasn't nominated in either category for ITW. I never understood how that was possible, given the brilliance of her portrayal, but I'm starting to learn a little more about how the process works. The Tonys aren't like a critics' award where people just vote for whatever they think is best. First, the various producers have to submit names they want to be considered for nominations, then, the nominating committee has to cull that for the actual nominees, and finally, the Tony voters (mostly business types) select the winners. It's possible the producers didn't submit Bernadette's name for consideration. It's an open question whether the part is leading or featured. If leading, they might not have wanted two actresses from the show competing against each other. If featured, Bernadette herself may not have wanted to be in that category. Also, Bernadette had stepped into the part at the last minute for what was planned from the beginning as a very limited run of a few months. She had already left to go on to other commitments by the time of the Tonys. At that time, I don't think anyone realized that the show would be taped with Bernadette, allowing future audiences to continue seeing the sublimnity of her performance as the Witch. In retrospect of course, the lack of even a nomination is one of those looming, egregious errors in judgement that call into question the premise behind award shows. Those are a few of my thoughts, but, of course, we'll probably never know what really went on behind the scenes.

| posted: 7/6/2004 at 12:03:11 PM ET I think at the time the part of the witch was considered a featured part so maybe, Eitak, that is where you got the idea she was nominated for that category. I think because the part now seems to be played by well known actresses that it is thought to be a lead. I agree with everything Karen said. It seems strange that she has no nomination for a role so many people associate her with because of the video but at the time she was only in the show for a short period of time and maybe she and her "people" didn't want her be nominated for featured actress. Sondheim himself didn't think Bernadette would even be interested in playing the role because it was a secondary lead. He didn't ask Bernadette to play the part - she asked to play it.

From: northern VA | posted: 7/6/2004 at 1:17:35 PM ET Bernadette was only in the show for a few months. It might not been possible to nominate her,or a nomination was not pushed, given the situation.
I don't have her ITW dates handy,so this is all speculation.
EDIT: Look at this site. The show opened on November 5, 1987, and Phylicia Rashad replaced Bernadette on April 14,1988. So by the time the nominating process and voting were underway,Bernadette had already left the show, and they were seeing Phylicia Rashad (who wasn't nominated either) when they were deciding nominations.
Of course, you have to be submitted. It's possible that it was decided to not submit her name.

Registered: 5/3/2002 | posted: 7/6/2004 at 1:52:02 PM ET What I heard was that Betty Buckley was originally to be the Witch in the Broadway production, but was fired in rehearsals because of those "personality conflicts" that have dogged her career. Supposedly, Sondheim was having an unrelated lunch with Bernadette and confiding his anxieties about recasting the part successfully, when she spontaneously volunteered to do it on a limited run contract. At the time, she was already committed to begin filming Slaves of New York in Spring of 1988, so she was only available for a short time frame. As Jenn said, the briefness of her run, and the fact that she had already left prior to Tony season may have been a factor in the lack of a nomination.

| posted: 7/6/2004 at 3:39:20 PM ET Betty Buckley is certainly talented but does not know how to "play well with others". I think there is definitely a reason she hasn't opened a show on Broadway since the 70s and has not even been on Broadway since Sunset Boulevard about 10 years ago. No one wants to deal with her.

| posted: 7/6/2004 at 5:38:57 PM ET I also read that Bernadette was not in the role long enough to be considered for a nomination. What they were saying on Broadwayworld.com (though who knows if it's true or not) is that Bernadette and a lot of other cast members came back after leaving just to do the taping.
